Spain's Regions: Climate, Pace and Character
From the green north to the sunny south, a plain-English tour of how Spain's regions differ in weather, rhythm and everyday life.

Spain is roughly the size of Texas and at least as varied. Here's a first orientation (not a ranking).
Andalusia (south)
Seville, Málaga, Granada, Cádiz, Córdoba. Hot summers, mild winters, the Spain of whitewashed villages and long evenings. The Costa del Sol has the most developed international community; inland cities are more traditional and more Spanish-speaking.
Valencia and Murcia (east coast)
Valencia city offers a full urban life with beaches and a famously mild climate; Alicante and the Costa Blanca are sunny, relaxed and popular with newcomers. Murcia is quieter and more affordable.
Catalonia and the Balearics
Barcelona is cosmopolitan and bilingual; the Costa Brava is rugged and beautiful; Mallorca and Menorca offer island life with good connections. Catalan is part of daily life here alongside Spanish.
Madrid and the center
The capital is dynamic, cultural, well connected and landlocked, with hot summers and cold, dry winters. Castilla around it offers historic small cities (Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca) and wide open landscapes.
The north (Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia)
Green, Atlantic, cooler and wetter, with extraordinary food and a strong regional identity. Summers are comfortable; winters are mild but grey. Fewer expats, deeper immersion.
What to weigh
Climate you'll actually enjoy year-round · sea or no sea · city, town or village · international community or immersion · airport access to the U.S. · cost of living, which varies more than people expect.
